Performance coaching is one-on-one work aimed at a specific outcome rather than general fitness: a competition, a return to sport after injury, a physically demanding job, or a personal target you have been circling for years. Greg Cooper coaches the physical side — strength, conditioning, movement quality — and the mental side: how you prepare, how you handle pressure, and how you keep going when progress stalls. It runs out of Eastgate Physiotherapy in Sherwood Park and starts with a free introductory consultation. It is a coaching service, not a health treatment, and is booked separately from physiotherapy.

A performance block starts with an assessment of where you are physically, an honest conversation about the target, and a written plan with dates. From there the work is coached one-on-one: training sessions, review of what you are doing between sessions, and regular check-ins against the plan.
The mindset side is not an add-on. Judo teaches that composure under pressure is trained the same way strength is: deliberately and repeatedly. Greg brings that into the coaching through goal-setting, routines for competition or high-stakes days, and a practical approach to resilience when things go wrong.

Coaching sits alongside the clinic’s physiotherapy services rather than replacing them. If you are returning from an injury, the physiotherapist sets the limits and Greg works inside them, so return-to-sport milestones are agreed rather than guessed at.

If you are currently in pain or injured, a physiotherapy assessment comes first. Call the clinic and we will point you to the right person.
Every block is built to one person’s target. The steps below are how Greg takes you from a first conversation to the day that matters, with the plan reviewed against dates rather than left to drift.
The goal, the timeline, your training and injury history, and what a plan would look like. You leave knowing whether it is the right fit and what it would cost.
Strength, conditioning and movement quality measured against what the target actually demands, so the plan trains the right things.
A written block working back from the target: what is trained when, how hard, and where the check-ins fall.
Forty-five or sixty minutes one-on-one, with the work between sessions reviewed so the plan is followed, not just written.
Routines for competition or high-stakes days, goal-setting, and a practical approach to resilience when a week goes badly.
Measures repeated at set points so adjustments are made early rather than the week before the event.
For a return from injury, the physiotherapist decides readiness for each stage and Greg coaches you to meet it. Notes are shared with your permission.
Coaching inside Eastgate means the physiotherapy team is a few steps away. A niggle in the middle of a block is assessed properly rather than trained through, and a return-to-sport plan is agreed between coach and physiotherapist instead of guessed at. The setting is quieter and more private than a commercial gym, and the attention is one-on-one for the whole session. Eastgate has served Sherwood Park for more than 35 years.
A plan built to your target rather than a generic program, physical preparation you can measure, a way of handling pressure that you have practised rather than hoped for, and a coach who is invested in the outcome. Just as important, the habits and self-knowledge to prepare for the next target on your own.
Performance coaching is a coaching service and is paid for directly. It is not billed to extended health plans, WCB or motor vehicle (Section B) claims, which cover physiotherapy, massage and acupuncture at the clinic but not coaching.

Sessions are 45 or 60 minutes, individually or as a block. Ask the front desk for current rates; the introductory consultation is free.

Extended health plans, WCB and Section B do not cover coaching. Your physiotherapy stays covered as usual.

Some health or wellness spending accounts accept coaching receipts. Check your plan; itemised receipts are provided.

Coaching is booked and billed separately from your physiotherapy visits, even on the same day.
Not sure what your plan allows? The front desk can explain how coaching is billed alongside your physiotherapy. See our funding pages for the health services that are covered.
A coaching block has a beginning and an end. Greg sets the target with you, measures progress against it at fixed points, and builds toward you arriving prepared — physically and mentally — on the day. Afterwards, most people carry on with lighter check-ins or move to personal training to keep building between targets.

Greg Cooper is Eastgate’s performance coach and personal trainer, a second-degree black belt in judo and the lead instructor at Kodokwai Judo Club. He works with competitive athletes, working professionals and people pursuing a personal goal, and his approach rests on the judo principles of maximum efficiency and mutual welfare: focused effort, no wasted work, and a coach who is invested in you doing well. Group training, judo and mindset-only coaching are also available on request. Coaching is a fitness service and is not covered by health benefits.
Personal training is about general strength and fitness with a coach. Performance coaching is aimed at a defined outcome with a timeline, and includes the preparation and mindset work that a target like that needs.
No. Performance coaching is a coaching service delivered alongside the clinic, not a health treatment, and it is not covered by health benefits. If you have pain or an injury, a physiotherapy assessment comes first.
No. A goal is enough: a first competition, a physical test for work, a hike you have been putting off, or a personal target. The plan is built to the goal, not to a level of athleticism.
Yes, in coordination with your physiotherapist. The physiotherapist decides when you are ready for each stage; Greg coaches the strength, conditioning and confidence to get there. If you are treated at Eastgate the two share notes with your permission.

It depends on the goal. A return-to-sport block is often eight to twelve weeks; a season-long plan runs with lighter check-ins. Greg proposes a length at the consultation.

I’m writing this review as the daughter of a patient, and I can’t say enough good things about Satish at East Gate Physiotherapy in Sherwood Park. My mom had been in severe pain for weeks and wasn’t able to sleep or even walk properly. Satish took so much time with her, showed incredible patience and compassion, and treated her with acupuncture that brought real relief. Seeing my mom finally get some rest and regain mobility was such a relief for our family. We’re incredibly grateful for the care, knowledge, and genuine kindness he showed. I would highly recommend Satish to anyone looking for thoughtful, effective treatment. He is not extremely thorough, knowledgeable and caring.
