Is Physiotherapy covered by Alberta Health Care? YES. Very limited coverage starting March 1, 2022. (As noted below)

Please note- effective March 1, 2022, Alberta Health care has made significant changes. Effective March 1, 2022,  only the patients who have undergone hip and knee joint replacement, fractures, and orthopedic surgeries will get physiotherapy covered by Alberta Healthcare.  Alberta Health would not cover physiotherapy for sprains, strain, tendinitis, bursitis, etc.

 Most people may have some coverage from private insurance which may cover physiotherapy treatments. If you were involved in a motor vehicle accident or injured at work may be covered by WCB.

Did you know that physical therapy, acupuncture, and massage treatments are covered by most extended health plans? 

If you are on the waiting list and you wish to access services immediately, we can directly bill your extended health benefits. Give us a call we can direct you to the appropriate resources to find out your coverage. Our clinic can also directly bill your extended health plan to save you the headache of filing all the necessary paperwork for reimbursement.

If you need more than the allotted treatments, the extra visits may be covered by other health benefits or you may pay out of pocket. If you have no other coverage, you can ask your physical therapist to apply to AHS for a review of your case to see if more treatments can be covered. If additional treatments are not approved, you will be responsible to cover the cost.
